COMPANY'S COMING

sSave time and concentrate on high-payoff cleaning---work on the most conspicuous areas, such as entrance halls and living room rugs. Have you ever noticed how much cleaning you can do in the hour before company comes?

If company's coming and things aren't quite up to par, bring out the candles, dim the lights, and serve up good food and conversation. As long as soil and disorder don't force themselves on one's attention, no normal person will seek them out.

Once you've attended to the basics, such as cleaning the bathroom, concentrate on what shows the most. Any home will pass muster if the clutter is contained, the surfaces are clean, and your best possessions are polished.

Practice cosmetic strategies taht fool the eye. Keep the white chair clean, and people will assume that the black one is also clean. If you have fringed rugs, vacuum the fringe so that it lies straight and neat. Guests will assume everything else is equally orderly. For a last-minut cleanup of the bathroom after the family has used it of course, go quickly over all surfaces with a spray window cleaner or other bathroom spray and a paper towel.
